Nepal Floods, August 2026
What Happened
On the morning of August 26, 2026, a sudden and severe flash flood swept down the Bhotekoshi River, tearing through communities in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, as well as the Gyirong border area on the China-Nepal border. Officials say the region had seen no rainfall beforehand, and experts believe the flood may have been triggered by a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) originating across the border in Tibet.
The surge has already caused serious damage:
Villages and settlements along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers have been washed away or badly damaged, including in the Timure and Syabrubesi areas of Rasuwa.
Six major hydropower and transmission facilities were damaged, cutting an estimated 430 MW of electricity — about one-eighth of Nepal's total capacity — and leaving several districts without power.
Authorities have issued flood warnings further downstream in Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan as water levels continue to rise.
The Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police have been deployed with helicopters for search and rescue operations, which are still ongoing. The full scale of the human toll is still being assessed, and we will continue to update this page as verified information becomes available.
Families and Children Need Support Now
How We're Responding
As with most disasters of this kind, entire families have been displaced overnight — homes, food stores, and belongings swept away with little to no warning. Early reports indicate a large number of children are among those affected, whether displaced from their homes, separated from caregivers in the chaos, or now without access to clean water, shelter, or basic necessities.
Children are especially vulnerable in the days following a disaster like this — to exposure, waterborne illness, and the trauma of losing their homes and routines. Because of this, a significant part of our response will be focused on their welfare: safe shelter, clean water, and support to help them and their families recover. At the same time, this is a crisis for entire communities, and our relief work will reach affected people of all ages — families, elders, and everyone in between.
Metal For Nepal is mobilizing to support communities affected by this disaster, just as we did during the 2015 Nepal earthquake. We have an established network of local NGO partners on the ground in Nepal, and we will be working directly with them to deliver relief as quickly and effectively as possible — from emergency supplies and clean water to longer-term rebuilding support.
It's still early, and the situation is evolving by the hour. What we do know is that communities in Rasuwa and surrounding districts will need sustained support in the days and weeks ahead, and we intend to be there for them.
